The Vostok Europe Radio Room, limited to 999 watches, pairs an automatic GMT movement with a dial that marks the radio silence periods kept by ships’ radio operators.
Four silence sectors
The navy-blue gradient dial highlights four 3-minute sectors at 15-minute intervals. During those minutes, ships’ radio operators stopped transmitting and listened for distress calls.
A second time zone
The TMI NH34 automatic GMT movement adds a fourth hand that turns once every 24 hours. When it is set to home time on a trip, the dial shows two time zones at once. The 48-click unidirectional bezel carries a ceramic ring with a 24-hour scale.
Named for ships’ radio rooms
After the Titanic sank in 1912, ships had to keep a radio watch. On radio room clocks, two red sectors marked silence periods for the 500 kHz Morse distress frequency, and two green ones for the 2182 kHz voice frequency.
The details
The Japanese-made TMI NH34 automatic GMT movement has 24 jewels and a power reserve of 41 hours when fully wound. It powers the hours, minutes, seconds, date, and GMT hand.
The 316L stainless steel case measures 46 mm across, 55.4 mm lug to lug, and 16.8 mm thick. A domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating covers the dial. Super-LumiNova coats the hands and indexes. The screw-down case back has a window that reveals the movement, and water resistance is rated at 200 meters.
The integrated two-tone bracelet in stainless steel and yellow gold PVD measures 22 mm at the lugs and fastens with a folding clasp. The watch ships in an oak veneer box.
Ship radio operators. After the Titanic sank in 1912, new rules required ships to keep a radio watch. Radio-room clocks later marked silence periods for the 500 kHz Morse and 2182 kHz voice distress frequencies. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014.
A fourth hand turns once every 24 hours against a 24-hour track, independent of the hour hand. Home time and local time can be read on the same dial.
The movement from the bridge side, with the rotor that winds the mainspring as the wrist moves and the balance swinging beside it.
Sapphire’s hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale makes it highly resistant to everyday scratches. It can still be scratched by harder materials, and a hard impact can chip or crack it, especially at an edge. The anti-reflective coating cuts glare.
The case measures 55.4 mm from lug to lug. That span across the top of the wrist matters more for fit than the 46 mm case diameter.
