Venezianico Nereide Acquaforte brings ink-filled acanthus engraving to a 42 mm steel case, with a black dial and hand-aged leather strap.
Acanthus leaves, familiar in classical decoration and revived in Renaissance art, extend across the case and bezel insert. In the acquaforte process, a protective coating covers the metal around the design while acid etches the exposed areas. Black ink is then worked into the recesses by hand and wiped from the surrounding surface, making the fine leaves stand out against the steel.
The semi-matte black dial keeps the focus on the engraving, with engraved lettering and polished markers. Black Swiss Super-LumiNova on the hands and markers emits a subtle green glow after exposure to light. A hand-aged black leather strap from Tuscany echoes the dark details; its brushed surface and engraved pin buckle continue the decorative treatment beyond the case.
The back depicts the winged Lion of St. Mark holding a book with the traditional Latin inscription Pax Tibi Marce Evangelista Meus, meaning Peace to you, Mark, my evangelist. Seen on the Republic’s flags, coins, and buildings, the lion gives the engraved case a specifically Venetian reference.
A Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement displays hours, minutes, and seconds without a date. The 316L stainless steel case measures 42 mm across, 49 mm from lug to lug, and 11.9 mm thick. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, and 120-click rotating steel bezel complete the construction, with water resistance rated at 20 atm.
It was the name of a submarine built in Venice between 1911 and 1913. The collection draws on that chapter of Venetian naval engineering for its maritime identity and rotating-bezel design.
Align the bezel’s reference marker with the minute hand at the start of an interval. As the hand advances, the scale shows elapsed minutes. With 120 clicks around a 60-minute scale, each click corresponds to half a minute. The bezel measures time independently of the movement.
Wind it by hand before putting it on. Venezianico recommends about 20–30 turns of the crown to provide an initial reserve. If the crown screws down, unscrew it before winding and secure it afterward. The rotor replenishes the reserve as you wear the watch, though light activity may not supply enough energy to keep it running.
Sapphire’s hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale makes it highly resistant to everyday scratches. It can still be scratched by harder materials, and a hard impact can chip or crack it, especially at an edge.
Miyota, part of the Citizen group, manufactures the 9039 in Japan. This 9-series automatic runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and also allows hand winding. Venezianico uses it in a watch made in Italy.
Black ink is applied by hand into the recessed acanthus pattern, then removed from the surrounding surface. It remains in the engraving to create contrast and make the fine design easier to distinguish.
