Platinum’s Izumo Kaga Maki-e Hama no Matsu fountain pen captures a Japanese coast in raised urushi decoration with gold and silver powders.
Pines along the shore and ocean waves form a Japanese coastal landscape across the ebonite body. The depth comes from taka maki-e, a technique that builds the decoration in relief. Craftspeople apply urushi repeatedly, then select from several dozen types of gold and silver powders to sprinkle onto the raised areas.
The brown-finished pen writes with an 18k gold nib and closes with a screw-on cap. It accepts ink cartridges or the included converter for bottled ink.
Made in Japan, it measures 154 mm capped, with a barrel length of 134 mm and a barrel width of 18 mm. It weighs 34.1 g with the cap.

How is the coastal scene made in relief?
Craftspeople build up the design with repeated coats of urushi, then sprinkle selected gold and silver powders onto the raised sections. This taka maki-e technique gives the shoreline pines and ocean waves their depth.
Can I use bottled ink?
Yes. A converter is included for bottled ink, and the pen also accepts ink cartridges.
How should I clean the decorated exterior?
Gently wipe the barrel and cap with a soft, dry cloth. Platinum advises against wet cloths, metal polish, and chemical cleaners.
