Overview

The Namiki Aya Hayate Gale fountain pen evokes swirling winds through silver powder decoration that moves across a black urushi lacquer surface.

Hayate means powerful winds. Silver powder traces their swirling, continuous movement across black urushi over resin. Kokkokai artisans sign the design, one of four in the Aya collection, whose name means colored light.

The collection explores nature through colored lacquer, Togidashi Maki-e, raden, and gold or silver powders. Hayate's silver pattern is made in Togidashi Maki-e, covered with lacquer and then revealed by burnishing.

The Japanese-made pen has an 18k gold nib and a screw-on cap. It takes ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink, measures 150 mm capped, and has a barrel width of 17 mm.

Questions & Answers

What does the Hayate pattern represent?

Hayate means powerful winds. The swirling silver powder pattern suggests their continuous movement across black urushi.

Who creates the Aya designs?

Kokkokai, Namiki's group of maki-e artisans, signs the collection. Its four designs explore the idea of colored light, the meaning of Aya.

How is the silver pattern made?

The resin body is coated in urushi and decorated in Togidashi Maki-e. Lacquer covers the silver powder pattern, which is then revealed by burnishing.

Can I use both cartridges and bottled ink?

It accepts ink cartridges or a compatible converter for bottled fountain pen ink.

How should I care for the lacquer?

Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid solvents and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
