Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Engineer III Marvelight Chronometer shows the weekday and magnified date on a gray dial lit by 27 tritium tubes.
Easy to read, day or night
The gray dial shows the hours, minutes, sweep seconds, and weekday, and a magnifier makes the date easier to read. Twenty-seven sealed tritium tubes illuminate the hands and hour markers continuously, keeping the time visible after dark. They need neither a battery nor a charge from sunlight or a lamp. Having the weekday beside the date makes it easy to keep track of the workweek.
Rooted in railroad timekeeping
Ball’s focus on dependable timekeeping goes back to 1891, when Webb C. Ball set inspection standards for railroad watches after the train collision at Kipton, Ohio. Today, the COSC-certified Ball RR1102-C automatic movement powers the time, weekday, and date displays. COSC, the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, checks the accuracy of each certified movement over 15 days.
The details
The case and matching bracelet are made from 904L stainless steel. The alloy’s chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper content gives it resistance to corrosion and acids. The case measures 40 mm across and 14 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown. The bracelet fastens with a folding clasp.
The watch resists magnetic fields up to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss), which helps protect the mechanical movement’s rate. It is also built to withstand shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity). The case is water-resistant to 100 meters.
No. This watch uses 27 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
904L contains chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper. That composition gives it strong resistance to corrosion and acids, contributing to the durability of the steel used in this watch.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. This watch has magnetic resistance to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The traditional test is performed before the movement is fitted into its case; its daily rate on the wrist can vary.
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
