Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Original pairs a blue dial with a luminous rotating bezel and mu-metal shielding in a 43 mm stainless steel case.
The Original combines a day-and-date display with the Hydrocarbon collection’s protective construction. Its unidirectional bezel measures an interval independently of the main hands, leaving the time, weekday, and date available throughout. Thirty sealed tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands, hour markers, and bezel continuously. Both the main time display and the elapsed-time scale stay lit without charging in sunlight or under a lamp.
Inside the steel case, a mu-metal shield redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement. The shield is an alloy of nickel, iron, copper, and molybdenum. By diverting those fields, it helps prevent them from disturbing the movement’s rate, with magnetic resistance to 80,000 A/m, equivalent to 1,000 gauss. SpringLOCK adds a protective cage around the balance spring to limit the effects of external impacts.
The case measures 43 mm across and 15.3 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Inside, the COSC-certified Ball RR1102-CSL automatic movement has a 38-hour power reserve. Shock resistance is rated to 7,500 Gs, and the case is water-resistant to 20 atm.
The rubber strap fastens with a pin buckle. A patented crown guard helps ensure the crown is properly closed.

What does SpringLOCK protect?
SpringLOCK uses a cage around the balance spring to limit how far its coils can expand during an impact. This helps protect the part of the movement that regulates its rate.
How are the dial and elapsed-time bezel illuminated?
Thirty tritium tubes illuminate the hands, hour markers, and bezel scale. Tritium inside each sealed glass tube activates a luminous coating continuously, without a battery or prior exposure to light. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
How does the magnetic shield protect timekeeping?
A mu-metal shield redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the mechanical movement. This helps keep those fields from disturbing its rate. The watch is rated to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss); stronger magnetic fields can exceed that protection.
What does COSC certification mean for this movement?
It passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during the test is -4 to +6 seconds. This traditional test is performed before the movement is cased, so the watch’s rate in daily wear can vary.
What does the Hydrocarbon crown guard do?
The patented guard protects the crown against impacts and helps ensure that it is properly closed. Both the crown and guard must be secured before the watch is exposed to water.
