Overview

The 42 mm Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon AeroGMT II keeps three time zones readable day and night, with tritium tubes lighting its blue dial and sapphire bezel.

Three time zones at once

Developed for commercial pilots, the AeroGMT II shows home time, local time, and a third time zone on one dial. The main hands show local time. The separate GMT hand points to home time on a fixed 24-hour scale. Turning the bidirectional bezel brings a second 24-hour scale into line with the same hand, so you can also read the time at another destination.

Both 24-hour scales distinguish day from night, so you can see at a glance whether it is morning or evening in the other zones. The watch is built for days that start in one time zone and end in another, from a red-eye flight to a morning meeting abroad.

Lit by 43 tritium tubes

The curved sapphire bezel carries an illuminated 24-hour scale. In all, 43 sealed tritium micro gas tubes light the hands, the hour markers, and the bezel markings. Each tube produces its own continuous light, without a battery or any need to be charged in sunlight or under a lamp. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the blue dial and date display.

Protected against magnetism

Webb C. Ball made magnetic resistance one of his railroad watch requirements after the 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio. Ball has treated magnetism as a threat to accuracy ever since. Shock resistance is rated at 7,500 Gs (7,500 times the force of gravity). Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). The case is water-resistant to 100 meters.

The details

The stainless steel case measures 42 mm across and 13.85 mm thick. A patented crown protection system helps keep the crown securely closed. Inside, the COSC-certified Ball RR1201-C automatic movement provides a 42-hour power reserve. COSC is the official Swiss institute that tests chronometers for accuracy over 15 days.

The stainless steel bracelet fastens with a patented folding clasp that includes an extension.

Questions & Answers

How do I read the three time zones?

The main hands show local time, and the GMT hand reads a second zone on the fixed 24-hour scale. Turn the bidirectional bezel to read that same GMT hand against another 24-hour scale for a third zone.

How do the travel scales stay illuminated after dark?

The 43 tubes illuminate the hands, hour markers, and sapphire bezel scale, keeping the time-zone readings visible after dark. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.

What does magnetic resistance mean for the movement?

Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.

What does COSC certification mean for this movement?

The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.

What does the Hydrocarbon crown guard do?

The patented guard protects the crown against impacts and helps ensure that it is properly closed. Both the crown and guard must be secured before the watch is exposed to water.
