Venezianico Nereide Ultraleggero 42 reveals its automatic movement through a patented three-layer skeletonized blue dial.
A patented open dial
The first of three stacked layers replaces the movement’s spacer ring, so the dial becomes part of the watch’s structure. The design is covered by patent no. 102021000031718. Transparent PMMA (acrylic) sections and skeletonized surfaces with radial satin finishing give the dial depth. Swiss-made BGW9 Super-LumiNova, charged by daylight or artificial light, helps you read the time in the dark.
Renaissance geometry
The open dial draws on Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man and the Renaissance ties between art, geometry, and science. Its layout follows the golden ratio, with the three layers framing the mechanism.
The details
The Japanese NH70A skeletonized automatic movement shows hours, minutes, and seconds. The solid 316L stainless steel case measures 42 mm across, 49 mm lug to lug, and 13.4 mm thick. It has a screw-down crown, a 120-click steel bezel, and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 200 meters.
The case back alternates screws and grooves and combines radial satin, micro-sandblasted, and polished finishes. The blue Italian rubber strap follows the lines of the case and fastens with a pin buckle. The rubber is flexible, resists abrasion, and is rated for temperatures from -22°F to 158°F (-30°C to +70°C). The Nereide name comes from a submarine built in Venice in 1919, part of the city’s mechanical-engineering history.
It was the name of a submarine built in Venice between 1911 and 1913. Its naval engineering history inspired the collection’s maritime design and rotating bezels.
Align the bezel’s reference marker with the minute hand at the start of an interval. As the hand advances, the scale shows elapsed minutes. With 120 clicks around a 60-minute scale, each click corresponds to half a minute. The bezel measures time independently of the movement.
Wind it by hand before putting it on. Venezianico recommends about 20–30 turns of the crown to provide an initial reserve. If the crown screws down, unscrew it before winding and secure it afterward. The rotor replenishes the reserve as you wear the watch, though light activity may not supply enough energy to keep it running.
Sapphire’s hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale makes it highly resistant to everyday scratches. It can still be scratched by harder materials, and a hard impact can chip or crack it, especially at an edge.
The openings reveal parts of the Japanese NH70A skeletonized automatic movement, supplied by TMI, part of the Seiko group. The first of the dial’s three layers also replaces the usual movement spacer ring. As the watch moves on your wrist, the rotor winds the mainspring.
