Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Engineer M Pioneer lights its black dial with 51 multicolored tritium tubes and has an 80-hour power reserve.
A multicolored glow in the dark
The sealed tritium tubes illuminate both the hands and the dial. Inside each glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating, so the tubes glow continuously without a battery or any charge from light. In a dark theater, the multicolored glow lets you read the time without lighting up your phone. The black dial also has a magnified date.
Ball’s in-house movement
The Engineer M collection honors founder Webster Clay Ball, who set inspection standards for railroad watches after an 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio. The collection uses Ball’s manufacture, or in-house, movements. The Pioneer is fitted with the COSC-certified RRM7309-CS automatic caliber. COSC, the official Swiss institute that certifies chronometers, tests each movement for 15 days.
The caliber has a silicon balance spring and an 80-hour power reserve when fully wound.
Protected against shocks and magnetism
Ball’s Amortiser ring surrounds the movement to absorb energy from lateral shocks, and the watch resists shocks of 2,500 Gs (2,500 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 200,000 A/m (2,500 gauss), which helps protect the movement’s timekeeping.
The details
The 904L stainless steel case measures 40 mm across and 13 mm thick, with a screw-down crown. The 904L alloy is valued for its high resistance to corrosion. Anti-reflective sapphire crystals cover the dial and case back.
Through the transparent back, you can see the automatic caliber and the rotor that winds the movement as you wear the watch. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters. A 20 mm 904L stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
Its 51 tritium tubes illuminate the hands and dial in multiple colors. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Fully wound, the movement can run for 80 hours, a little more than three days. How long it keeps running after you take it off depends on the power already stored in the mainspring. If you wind or set the watch before wearing it again, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed for the rated water resistance.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 200,000 A/m (2,500 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
Yes, we are an Official Ball Authorised Dealer, and an authorised dealer for every brand we carry.
