Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon NEDU Automatic Chronograph Watch with Blue Dial.
The Engineer Hydrocarbon line carries Ball's heaviest protection: crown guards, lubricants rated for extreme cold, and several models developed with military and professional diving units. The NEDU is named for the Navy Experimental Diving Unit, which writes the diving and decompression rules for the US armed forces; its chromed ceramic bezel turns in one direction and its crown holds a patented helium valve. Satin titanium, 42 mm in diameter and 17.3 mm thick.
COSC chronometer-certified, the Ball RR1402 provides a 48-hour power reserve. The hands and the indices are lit by 21 sealed glass tubes of tritium gas, each one self-powered for 25 years. Around it, the case absorbs impact to 7,500 Gs, while magnetic protection reaches 4,800 A/m.
The case is rated to 60 atm, which takes it beyond the depth a recreational diver reaches.

What happens to the gas tubes over the years?
The 21 tubes hold tritium gas, which emits its own light through radioactive decay, continuously and on its own energy. Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years, so the glow fades slowly. Ball rates the tubes for at least 25 years of useful reading.
What does COSC certification actually guarantee?
The movement was tested for 15 days by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres in 5 positions and at 3 temperatures, and it must hold an average daily rate between -4 and +6 seconds. The certificate covers the movement as tested, before it was cased.
Is it affected by magnets?
The case provides magnetic protection to 4,800 A/m, which covers the everyday sources that shift the rate of a mechanical watch.
What is the helium valve for?
On saturation dives the breathing mixture is helium, and its small molecules work their way into the case under pressure. The valve releases them during decompression, when the pressure inside the case would otherwise lift the crystal.
Does it fit under a shirt cuff?
At 17.3 mm thick and 42 mm across, this is a substantial watch that sits high on the wrist. It passes under a loose cuff and will catch on a close one.
