The Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon NEDU is a dive chronograph with a black dial, an automatic helium-release valve in the crown, and 600 meters of water resistance.
Built for saturation diving
The NEDU takes its name from the U.S. Navy Experimental Diving Unit, which develops operational diving and decompression procedures for the armed forces. In the pressurized environment of saturation diving, helium can enter the case. As the surrounding pressure falls during decompression, the helium-release valve lets the helium escape and relieves the excess pressure inside the watch. The case is water-resistant to 600 meters.
A bezel for timing dives
A unidirectional chromed ceramic bezel frames the black dial and resists corrosion, scratches, and color fading from ultraviolet light. Super-LumiNova on the bezel markings glows after exposure to light. On the hands, dial, and pushers, 21 sealed tritium tubes glow continuously without needing to be charged. Underwater, the bezel times the dive itself, and at the surface the chronograph can track a separate interval.
Protected against magnetism
Magnetic resistance has been a Ball requirement since 1891. That year, a train collision at Kipton, Ohio, led Webb C. Ball to set standards for railroad watches. The watch is built to withstand shocks of 7,500 Gs (7,500 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches).
The details
The satin-finished titanium case measures 42 mm across and 17.3 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and patented crown protection.
The COSC-certified Ball RR1402-C automatic chronograph movement records elapsed time up to 12 hours and has a 48-hour power reserve. COSC, the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, checks the accuracy of each certified movement over 15 days. Alongside the chronograph counters, the dial displays the weekday and date.
A satin-finished titanium bracelet fastens with a patented folding clasp that includes an extension.
During decompression after saturation diving, the automatic valve releases excess pressure from inside the watch. Helium can enter the case in a pressurized, helium-rich environment; as the surrounding pressure falls, the valve lets it escape. Ball integrates it into the crown. The bezel and chronograph remain separate ways to measure elapsed time.
The 21 tritium tubes on the hands, dial, and pushers provide continuous light. The ceramic bezel uses Super-LumiNova, a luminous coating that glows after it has been charged by exposure to light. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
Yes, we are an Official Ball Authorised Dealer, and an authorised dealer for every brand we carry.
With over 15 years in the luxury market, we guarantee the authenticity and quality of every piece we sell.
Your order arrives brand new in its original Ball packaging, with all official documentation and the Ball warranty card, stamped and dated by us.
The warranty covers manufacturing defects. It doesn't cover normal wear and tear or accidental damage — and on watches, it doesn't cover straps, bracelets, or batteries.
