U-Boat U-65 TEK Quartz Watch with Black Dial.
The U-65 line curves the dial beneath the crystal and moves time setting to a button on the case back, presenting the front of the watch as one unbroken surface. The U-65 TEK builds its dial on three overlapping layers for a printed-circuit effect, read through the oil bath, in a PVD case of 44 mm in diameter.
A Swiss Ronda 756 quartz movement operates submerged in the oil, sealed beneath a domed sapphire crystal. A Locking Ring System on the case back provides access to the battery and the oil without requiring factory intervention. The lugs move where they meet the case, so the strap follows the wrist.
Presented in black, the dial is built in three overlapping layers worked to a printed-circuit effect, its hands and numerals treated with beige Super-LumiNova for legibility in the dark. The watch comes on a black leather strap measuring 22 mm at the lugs, closed by a steel tongue buckle with PVD treatment.

What is the oil inside the case for?
It fills the space between the dial and the crystal. Light travels through the oil at close to the same speed as through the crystal, so the reflection falls away and the hands read as if they sat on the surface. An air bubble takes up the change in volume as the temperature moves.
How is the battery changed in an oil-filled watch?
Through the Locking Ring System on the case back, which a watchmaker opens and closes to replace the battery and top up the oil in one operation. The system is what allows the service to be carried out locally, without factory intervention.
Where does the U-Boat design come from?
From a drawing Ilvo Fontana made in 1942 for the Italian naval military forces, a diving watch that remained on paper. His grandson Italo Fontana revived it in Lucca and founded U-Boat on its proportions and on the crown set on the left side of the case.
How do you set the time?
From a pusher in the case back. The setting moved off the flank of the case so that the side could stay unbroken, which is what lets the curved dial reach all the way to the edge of the crystal.
What is the coating on the case?
Physical vapor deposition. The coating metal is vaporized in a vacuum chamber and bonded to the steel as a hard layer, which holds up to daily abrasion far better than electroplating of the same thickness.
