Tips to travel by plane with your fountain pen

A pen always by your heart

If you have a fountain pen, then you know that these are not just writing instruments, but valuable pieces that carry moments, emotions and memories. And as such, we always carry them with us. Such is the case when traveling. What better time than to have your faithful companion than when you have new adventures or important occasions away from home?

However, fountain pens must be properly cared for during a trip, especially if traveling by plane, both for the sake of the pen and for the entire contents of your luggage.

    1. EMPTY PEN, NO PAIN

Inside the plane, the pressure inside the body rises. This pressure is released through the nib, so the pen should always be empty.

That is why the number one tip is to travel with the converter empty. We recommend our article on how to clean a fountain pen for a perfect emptying.

    2. DO NOT USE IT

In case you are unable to empty your pen before travel, our next advice would be not to use the pen during the flight, especially during take-off and landing, which are the times when there are the greatest pressure changes. Likewise, it is important to always place the pen in a vertical position and with the nib pointing up, since gravity prevents the ink from rising to the nib.

If you insists on carrying your pen fully charged, make sure the converter is completely full, this way you avoid air that could generate a leak.

    3. CLOSE THE INK BOTTLES TIGHTLY

Fortunately, the inkwells are not affected by pressure, as the air bubble is always kept up and when you open them there is very little chance of spilling when the pressure is balanced. You only have to make sure that they are well closed and wrap them in a cloth or some material that protects them if they are made of glass.

Now you can travel in complete safety knowing that your fountain pen rests safely in your luggage, preparing for the next features that tell your adventures.
