Tips & tricks for fountain pen maintenance

Hello everyone!

Today we are going to show you some tips and tricks to maintain your fountain pens in the best possible conditions.

Many of you contact us asking for advice of how to take care of your fountain pens. The first thing you need to know is that depending on how old our fountain pen is our maintenance must be different.

If you have only owned the fountain pen for weeks or months, fountain pen experts recommend to store the fountain pen when charged in a vertical position with the nib facing upwards. If we store it the other way round ink will be in constant contact with the feeder and this can damage both our fountain pen and its cap.

When we think we are not going to use the fountain pen for months or even years, it is necessary to store the fountain pen uncharged and dry. This way, when using it again we will have no problems of finding dry ink or any waste time may have caused on its inside, and we will be able to enjoy it as if we were using it again for first time. In this case, we must clean our fountain pen.

Once we have already washed the fountain pen, it is important to dry it carefully. The feeder's function is to retain ink, therefore a brief drying period may cause an incomplete evaporation of water.

Normally, fountain pen caps are hermetic. They are really effective for daily use in order to keep ink flowing, but they can be harmful when storing our fountain pens for a couple of months. Water vapor corrode metallic parts inside the cap and nib.

Furthermore, we recommend to keep the fountain pen open or uncapped with its nib faced upwards during at least two weeks. This way we will allow water to evaporate completely. When starting the drying process we can step up the elimination of water by resting the nib on absorbent paper.

Once the fountain pen is completely dry we can store it in a case or box always preferably horizontal in order to avoid any flaws!

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding your fountain pen's maintenance. We will be glad to help!

Have a great day,

Sirs, I own a Ipsiron Quadra B14-Q fountain pen in sterling silver that unfortunately has a broken part. The part that is broken is the bottom barrel that holds the nib and screws onto the main body, sorry but don’t know the technical names. I was wondering if it was possible to purchase a replacement part and if so what would be the cost? The pen used to belong to my late father and is of great sentimental value to me. Here’s hoping you can help me. Yours Celia Watson.
