How to choose the nib size of your fountain pen

March 22, 2018 2 min read

Good morning everyone!

The nib size is one of the most important choices we have to make when purchasing a fountain pen. Today we present you our Nib Size Guide, which includes an explanation of the most common nib sizes, as well as an overview of the ones you will be able to find at Iguana Sell.

Why is it important the nib size?

Calligraphy is a personal and defining characteristic, and the nib has a lot to do with it. Generally, the broader it is, the more ink will flow out over the paper and the softer will be the writing experience.

Most fountain pens can be found incorporating Fine nib (F), Medium nib (M) or Broad nib (B). Least common but also interesting and available in some pieces are the Extra-Fine (XF), Double Broad (BB), italic and oblique (OB). The Medium size is without doubt the favourite one for most writers.

Finer nibs

Indicated for those whose calligraphy is smaller. The finer nibs will prevent your characters from mixing up and will allow you create clear, precise lines. They adapt perfectly to all types of paper.

Broader nibs

Indicated for those whose calligraphy is larger. The nib will remain always wet, which is also better for faster writing and will bring a softer writing experience. Therefore, it is perfect for the ones who are looking for a fountain pen for signing.

Besides the most common nib sizes, there are also special nibs, sometimes even created exclusively by a certain brand. As examples, Music and Zoom nibs enjoy great prestige among writing lovers as their lines vary by only changing the writing angle. Both create a broader stroke, but the endings of the Music nib are sharper, and so its lines are also more angular.

Nib sizes by brand

It is important to take into account that nib sizes may be different depending on which is the brand of the fountain pen. In general terms, it can be stated that the stroke of japanese fountain pen nibs such as the ones made by Nakaya, Namiki or Platinum, are smaller than the ones made by eastern brands like Montblanc, Parker or Aurora. The reason is that japanese calligraphy is more complex than the latin alphabet, and so it is needed a finer and more precise instrument.

We hope this guide may help you in choosing the perfect nib size for your hand writing.
