The Zeppelin LZ 120 Bodensee shows its automatic movement twice, through an open-heart window in the green dial and through the case back.
The balance on view
The open-heart window reveals the balance, which swings back and forth several times a second and regulates the movement. Silver numerals and hour markers surround a small seconds subdial, and luminous hands help you read the time in low light.
Named for LZ 120 Bodensee
LZ 120 Bodensee began scheduled passenger flights between Friedrichshafen and Berlin in August 1919. Bodensee is the German name for Lake Constance, the lake at Friedrichshafen.
The details
The Japanese Miyota 82S5 automatic movement powers the hours, minutes, and small seconds, and provides a power reserve of about 40 hours. A see-through case back reveals the rotor. The stainless steel case measures 40 mm across and 12 mm thick, and a hardened K1 mineral crystal covers the dial. Water resistance is rated at 50 meters.
The dark brown leather strap, 20 mm at the lugs, fastens with a pin buckle. The watch is made in Germany.
The balance, which regulates the movement. It beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, which is six beats every second. The see-through case back shows the rotor, which winds the mainspring as your wrist moves.
About 40 hours when fully wound. Daily wear keeps the mainspring wound. After a longer period off the wrist, a few turns of the crown will restart it.
No. The Miyota 82S5 movement shows the hours, minutes, and small seconds, without a date. The LZ 120 Bodensee 8160-5, with a Miyota 8315 movement, adds a date.
8166-1 has a beige dial and a brown leather strap. Both share the 40 mm case, the Miyota 82S5 movement, and the open-heart window.
It’s water resistant to 50 meters, but Zeppelin advises against wearing it in the shower or tub, or swimming in the ocean with it.
