Overview

Zeppelin LZ 126 Los Angeles Quartz Chronograph Watch with Cream Dial.

The airship that crossed the Atlantic from Friedrichshafen to Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 81 hours in October 1924 gives the LZ 126 Los Angeles line its name. On the LZ 126 Los Angeles Chronograph, a small seconds register joins the chronograph counters. The case, in stainless steel, measures 42 mm across and 12 mm thick.

A mineral crystal covers the Japanese 6S21 quartz movement, which displays the date.

The cream dial carries black numerals and indices, framed by a tachymeter scale. A brown leather strap secures the watch with a pin buckle.

Questions & Answers

What did the LZ 126 achieve?

It crossed the Atlantic from Friedrichshafen to Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 81 hours in October 1924, and then served in the United States Navy as the USS Los Angeles.

Where is it made?

In Germany, at the Zeppelin in-house production in Ruhla, Thuringia. The movement comes from a Swiss or a Japanese maker, and the specification identifies it.

What is the tachymeter scale for?

It converts elapsed time into speed over a known distance. Start the chronograph at the beginning of a measured mile and stop it at the end, and the scale gives the average speed.

How does a mineral crystal hold up?

It resists scratching better than acrylic and takes an impact better than sapphire, which is brittle. A deep scratch stays, so it is the crystal that asks for the least care and forgives the most.

Who makes the movement?

Miyota, the movement maker owned by Citizen in Japan. Its movements are among the most widely used in the world, which keeps them simple to service and their parts easy to find.
