Overview

Venezianico Bucintoro Automatic Chronograph Watch with Black Dial.

Named for the Bucintoro, the ceremonial galley of the Doge of Venice, the Bucintoro 42 is the first Venezianico chronograph, on a movement hand-assembled at the TMI facilities in Morioka, Japan. The galley opened the Regata Storica, the most prestigious race on the Grand Canal, rowed by the finest oarsmen of Venice. The stainless steel case measures 42 mm in diameter and 11.70 mm in thickness.

Beating at 28,800 A/h, a Japanese NE88A automatic movement powers a chronograph with a column wheel, vertical clutch, three-pointed hammer and instant zero reset, all beneath a double domed sapphire crystal.

The black dial is laid out with the 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock, the running seconds at 3 and the hour counter below, inside a tachymeter scale on the rehaut, with hands and indices in Swiss-made BGW9 Super-LumiNova. Fitted with the Canova bracelet, the watch closes on a folding clasp.

Questions & Answers

What was the Bucintoro?

The ceremonial galley of the Doge, the flagship the Republic sent out on its state occasions, and the vessel the Regata Storica still honors. Its movement is assembled by hand in Morioka. Venezianico was founded in late 2017 by the brothers Alberto and Alessandro Morelli while they were studying at Ca’ Foscari in Venice, and it is based in San Donà di Piave.

How do you operate the chronograph?

The upper pusher starts and stops the timing hand and the lower one returns it to zero. The counters on the dial record the minutes and the hours the central hand has covered past its first turn.

What difference does a column wheel make?

It is the part that sequences start, stop and reset. A column wheel turns the three commands through a toothed pillar, and that is why the pushers have the short travel and the clean break that a cam chronograph softens.

What is the tachymeter scale for?

It converts elapsed time into speed over a known distance. Start the chronograph at the beginning of a measured mile and stop it at the end, and the scale reads the average speed directly off the flange.

Does the crown screw down?

Yes. It threads onto the case tube and compresses its gasket, which is what holds the water rating. Unscrew it to set the time, and screw it back down before the watch goes near water.
