The Ball Trainmaster Legend is a dress watch for every day, with a silver gradient dial, a corrosion-resistant 904L steel case and bracelet, and a sapphire display back.
Rooted in Ball’s railroad history
The Trainmaster collection draws on Ball’s railroad timekeeping history. Early Ball railroad watches bore the “Ball’s Standard” marking, a sign of the standards Webb C. Ball set after the 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio.
A gradient dial lit by 14 tritium tubes
On the Legend, the silver gradient dial shifts in tone across its surface, giving the simple time-and-date display a sense of depth. Fourteen sealed tritium gas tubes keep the hands and hour markers illuminated continuously. They glow without any exposure to light, so the time stays readable after dark.
A movement on display
The Ball RR1103 automatic movement provides a 38-hour power reserve and shows the time and date.
A sapphire case back reveals the movement.
The details
The case is made from 904L stainless steel and measures 40 mm across and 11.45 mm thick. The alloy’s chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper content gives it resistance to corrosion and acids. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial. The case has a push crown and is water-resistant to 30 meters.
Ball rates the watch for shocks up to 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). A 20 mm 904L stainless steel bracelet fastens with a folding clasp.
The collection recalls the early watches bearing Ball’s Standard, the marking associated with the brand’s railroad timekeeping heritage. The Legend follows that tradition with a clear time-and-date display and a restrained silver gradient dial.
No. This watch uses 14 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
904L contains chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper. That composition gives it strong resistance to corrosion and acids, contributing to the durability of the steel used in this watch.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
