With an 80-hour power reserve, the Ball Engineer M Marvelight can sit unworn over a weekend and still be keeping time on Monday.
Ball’s in-house movement
The Engineer M collection honors founder Webster Clay Ball, who set inspection standards for railroad watches after an 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio. The collection uses Ball’s manufacture, or in-house, movements. Ball introduced its first manufacture caliber, the 7309, in 2017.
More than three days of power
Inside this Marvelight is the COSC-certified Ball RRM7309-C automatic movement. COSC is the official Swiss institute that tests chronometers for accuracy over 15 days. Fully wound, the movement’s 80-hour power reserve keeps the watch going for more than three days off the wrist.
Easy to read, day or night
The blue dial shows the hours, minutes, sweep seconds, and date. Seventeen sealed tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands and hour markers continuously. Tritium inside the glass tubes activates their luminous inner coating. The tubes glow without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp.
The details
Anti-reflective sapphire crystals cover both the dial and the case back, which reveals the automatic movement and its winding rotor. The stainless steel case measures 43 mm across and 13.05 mm thick, with a screw-down crown. The watch resists shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). The case is water-resistant to 100 meters.
A stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
The transparent back reveals the Ball RRM7309-C manufacture movement and its automatic winding rotor. The COSC-certified caliber powers the time and date.
No. This watch uses 17 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Fully wound, the movement can run for 80 hours, a little more than three days. How long it keeps running after you take it off depends on the power already stored in the mainspring. If you wind or set the watch before wearing it again, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed for the rated water resistance.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
