Named for the Ohio roots of Ball’s railroad history, the Ball Engineer III Ohio combines a COSC-certified movement with mu-metal shielding and a white dial.
Ball’s Ohio roots
Webb C. Ball established his business in Cleveland, Ohio, where his railroad timekeeping work also took shape. After the 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio, he set the standards that railroad watches had to meet.
Easy to read, day or night
The clear dial shows the time and date at a glance. Fifteen sealed tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands and dial markings continuously.
The tubes produce their own light, so you can read the time after dark without first charging them under a lamp or in sunlight.
Shielded from magnetism
Inside the case is the COSC-certified Ball RR1103-C automatic movement. COSC, the official Swiss institute that certifies chronometers, tests each movement for 15 days. A mu-metal shield diverts magnetic fields around the movement to help protect its rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 80,000 A/m, equivalent to 1,000 gauss.
The details
The case and bracelet are made from 904L stainless steel. The alloy’s chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper content gives it resistance to corrosion and acids.
The case measures 40 mm across and 13.15 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown. Shock resistance is rated at 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity), and the case is water-resistant to 100 meters. The bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
Ohio is where Webb C. Ball established his business and developed his railroad timekeeping work. The model takes its name from that history, with a clear time-and-date display and self-powered illumination.
No. This watch uses 15 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
They serve different purposes. The 904L steel forms the case and bracelet; its chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper content gives it resistance to corrosion and acids. A mu-metal shield inside the case redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement to help protect its rate. The watch is rated to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
