The Vostok Europe Expedition North Pole Polar Light sets a solar movement and a skeletonized blue dial in a rainbow PVD case.
A rainbow PVD case
The rainbow PVD finish forms a pattern that differs from one watch to the next. A fixed bezel frames the blue dial, which is skeletonized in layers over the solar cell.
Powered by light
The solar cell turns daylight or lamplight into energy for the S.Epson VS57 movement, and a power storage indicator shows when the watch needs more light. On an expedition that lasts for months, the movement needs no battery changes.
Day and night at a glance
A 24-hour indicator tells day from night, a useful cue when the polar sun stays up around the clock. A Polar Daylight scale shows the hours of daylight at the North Pole through the seasons.
Inspired by North Pole-1
The Expedition North Pole line draws on North Pole-1, the first drifting research station, which opened on June 6, 1937, about 20 km (12 miles) from the Pole. The station drifted more than 2,000 km (about 1,240 miles) on the ice before its crew was evacuated on February 19, 1938.
The details
The Japanese-made S.Epson VS57 solar-powered quartz movement powers the hours, minutes, seconds, date, 24-hour indicator, and power storage indicator. It provides 5 months of power on a full charge.
The 316L stainless steel case, finished in rainbow PVD, measures 47 mm across, 58.2 mm lug to lug, and 16.7 mm thick. A 4.1 mm thick K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial. Super-LumiNova coats the hands and indexes. The solid case back screws down, and water resistance is rated at 200 meters.
The watch comes with a leather strap and a silicone strap, both 24 mm at the lugs and fastened with a buckle. Quick-release spring bars let you swap them without tools. The watch ships in a Vostok Europe paper box.
The first drifting station for hydrological and geographical research in the polar area. It opened on June 6, 1937, about 20 km from the Pole. Over 9 months it drifted more than 2,000 km on its ice floe, and it closed on February 19, 1938.
About 5 months on a full charge. A solar cell under the dial converts any light into energy stored in a rechargeable cell, so daylight or a lamp keeps it running.
A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral glass with scratch resistance close to that of sapphire. On this watch, the crystal has an anti-reflective coating to improve readability.
The case measures 58.2 mm from lug to lug. That span across the top of the wrist matters more for fit than the 47 mm case diameter.
Seiko Epson in Japan. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014. The case is assembled in Lithuania around this quartz caliber.
