Overview

The Vostok Europe Atomic Age Fermi pairs an automatic GMT movement with 14 Swiss tritium tubes that light its blue dial and hands in the dark.

Lit by 14 tritium tubes

Twelve tritium tubes stand vertically in metal reflectors around the dial, and two more sit in the hour and minute hands. Each sealed glass tube glows continuously, without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp. Vostok Europe guarantees the glow for at least 10 years.

A second time zone

The TMI NH34 automatic GMT movement adds a fourth hand that turns once every 24 hours. When it is set to home time on a trip, you can read both time zones on the same dial.

A layered dial in a riveted case

The blue dial is built in layers, with a grain texture, polished metal indexes, and brushed skeletonized hands. The case is made of two metal parts welded together and secured by two rivets.

Named for Enrico Fermi

The Atomic Age collection marks the nuclear era, which began when Chicago Pile-1, the first nuclear reactor, went critical on December 2, 1942. The collection has three lines, each honoring a 20th-century physicist. The Fermi line is named for Enrico Fermi, winner of the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics, who led the team that built that reactor.

The details

The Japanese-made TMI NH34 automatic movement has 24 jewels and a 41-hour power reserve. It powers the hours, minutes, seconds, date, and GMT hand.

The 316L stainless steel case measures 48 mm across, 58.3 mm lug to lug, and 16.6 mm thick. A 3.7 mm thick curved K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial. The crown screws down, and the screw-down case back is fitted with a colored K1 crystal bearing the Atomic Age logo. Water resistance is rated at 200 meters.

The watch comes with a silicone strap with ventilation holes and a leather strap, both 25 mm at the lugs. Each fastens with a buckle, and a replacement tool for strap changes is included. The watch ships in a red Vostok Europe DryBox XL, which converts into a collector’s box for four watches.

Questions & Answers

What does the Atomic Age collection mark?

The nuclear era that opened with the first reactor in 1942. The collection has 3 lines, dedicated to Enrico Fermi, Andrei Sakharov and Robert Oppenheimer. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014.

How do the tritium tubes work?

Each marker is a sealed glass tube in which tritium gas makes a luminescent coating glow continuously without charging. This model carries 12 on the dial and 2 in the hands. The Trigalight tubes are made in Switzerland by MB-microtec, a Vostok Europe supplier since 2009. After about 10 years, their brightness settles at approximately 50 percent.

How do I read the second time zone?

A fourth hand turns once every 24 hours against a 24-hour track, independent of the hour hand. Home time and local time can be read on the same dial.

What is K1 crystal?

A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral glass with scratch resistance close to that of sapphire. On this watch, the crystal has an anti-reflective coating to improve readability.

How does the case size affect the fit on the wrist?

The case measures 58.3 mm from lug to lug. That span across the top of the wrist matters more for fit than the 48 mm case diameter.
