U-Boat Classico Chronograph Automatic Watch with Blue Dial.
Limited to 299 pieces worldwide. Descended from the diving watch Ilvo Fontana drew in 1942 for the Italian naval forces, the Classico line carries the left-hand crown that drawing placed there. The Classico Chronograph is cut in grade 2 titanium beneath a matte tungsten bezel, in a numbered edition of 299 pieces, its titanium case 45 mm in diameter.
A Swiss SW 500 automatic movement powers the hours, minutes, seconds, a chronograph, date and a 24-hour indicator beneath a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. A crown extraction lever sits at 8:30, while the titanium case back is closed with seven screws and opens in a U-shaped sapphire window over the movement. The bezel is matte tungsten and the 24-hour hand is red.
Blue, the dial is built on three levels of metal, with a waffle pattern on the upper layer, its indexes, numerals and hands treated with black Super-LumiNova for legibility in the dark. It is fitted with an Alcantara rubber strap lined with leather, handcrafted in Tuscany with waxed cotton stitching, secured by a titanium tongue buckle.
From a drawing Ilvo Fontana made in 1942 for the Italian naval military forces, a diving watch that remained on paper. His grandson Italo Fontana revived it in Lucca and founded U-Boat on its proportions and on the crown set on the left side of the case.
The upper pusher starts and stops the timing hand, and the lower pusher returns it to zero. The registers on the dial carry the minutes and the hours that the central hand has counted beyond its first turn.
A hand that turns once a day against a track marked from 1 to 24, so a glance separates morning from evening on a dial whose hour hand turns twice. Marine and aviation logs keep a 24-hour clock, which is where the reading comes from.
Tungsten is far harder than steel, so a polished tungsten bezel holds its mirror finish through the knocks that would dull a steel one. U-Boat took it up as one of its own innovations, alongside the crown on the left and the patented release that frees it from its stop.
The movement from the bridge side, with the oscillating weight that winds the mainspring as the wrist moves and the balance swinging at the far end. That weight is cut open so the gear train stays in view behind it.
