Overview

Luminox Commando Raider Quartz GMT Watch with Beige Dial.

Developed with military and law enforcement specialist Andrea Micheli, the Commando Raider line centers on a CARBONOX™ unidirectional countdown bezel with an integrated compass rose. The Commando Raider 3320 uses a Swiss caliber with a 24H module to display a second time zone. Its CARBONOX™ case measures 46 mm and is 14 mm thick.

Inside, the Swiss Ronda 515.24H quartz caliber powers the hours, minutes, seconds, and date, with a 24-hour hand indicating a second time zone. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial, and a 316L stainless steel screw-in see-through case back closes the case.

Military-style numerals and military time appear on the beige dial. Tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands and hour markers for up to 25 years. The watch is fitted with a black rubber strap, 24 mm wide at the lugs, secured by a steel buckle.

Questions & Answers

Who was the Commando Raider built with?

Andrea Micheli, a military and law enforcement specialist, who worked with Luminox on the countdown bezel and its integrated compass rose. Luminox was founded in 1989 by Barry Cohen and Richard Timbo, and assembles and tests its watches in Solothurn, Switzerland.

How does Luminox Light Technology work?

Each marker is a borosilicate glass capsule about 0.5 mm across, coated inside with phosphorescent powder and filled with tritium gas, so it glows around the clock with nothing to charge. Luminox holds the intensity constant for the first 10 years, and after that the brightness decreases gradually as the gas loses energy, over a visible life of up to 25 years.

How do you take a bearing with this bezel?

Point the hour hand at the sun and read the midpoint between the hand and the 12 marker, which gives south in the northern hemisphere. The compass rose on the countdown bezel then holds that line.

How often does the battery need changing?

Luminox rates this movement at 50 months on a battery. The tritium tubes are self-powered and draw no energy from the battery.

How well does the crystal hold up?

Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond, and Luminox gives it an anti-reflective coating for readability at any angle in bright light.
