Overview

Luminox Leatherback Sea Turtle Quartz Watch with Black Dial.

The Leatherback Sea Turtle line takes its name from the turtle-shaped outline of the classic Luminox case, with its protected crown balanced by a projection on the opposite side. With the Leatherback Sea Turtle 0300, this design becomes the smallest watch in the Luminox catalog. Its CARBONOX™ case measures 39 mm and is 12 mm thick.

The Swiss Ronda 515 quartz caliber powers the hours, minutes, seconds, and date beneath a hardened mineral crystal. The case features a security gasket crown, a CARBONOX™ unidirectional bezel, and a CARBONOX™ screw-on case back.

The black dial is complemented by tritium gas tubes on the hands, hour markers, and bezel, providing illumination for up to 25 years. The black silicone rubber strap measures 19 mm at the lugs and fastens with an IP black steel buckle.

Questions & Answers

Why is it called a Sea Turtle?

Because of the case. The protected crown is balanced by an outcropping on the opposite side, which gives the classic Luminox case the outline of a turtle seen from above. Luminox was founded in 1989 by Barry Cohen and Richard Timbo, and assembles and tests its watches in Solothurn, Switzerland.

How does Luminox Light Technology work?

Each marker is a borosilicate glass capsule about 0.5 mm across, coated inside with phosphorescent powder and filled with tritium gas, so it glows around the clock with nothing to charge. Luminox holds the intensity constant for the first 10 years, and after that the brightness decreases gradually as the gas loses energy, over a visible life of up to 25 years.

How often does the battery need changing?

Luminox rates this movement at 50 months on a battery. The tritium tubes are self-powered and draw no energy from the battery.

What does hardened mineral crystal mean?

Luminox hardens its mineral crystals to between 550 and 650 Vickers, about 20% harder than conventional mineral crystal.

Who makes the movement?

Ronda, in Lausen, Switzerland. The watch carries the Swiss Made mark, which requires at least 60% of the manufacturing costs of the watch head to be incurred in Switzerland.
