The Namiki Yukari Apricot Tree and Warbler fountain pen brings a spring songbird and an apricot tree together in a motif rooted in Japanese tradition.
The apricot tree is associated with protection in Japanese tradition. The uguisu evokes the sound of early spring. This Asian songbird is more often heard than seen, and its distinctive breeding song carries across much of Japan from the start of the season.
Togidashi-Hira Maki-e places the tree and bird against black urushi with gold trim. The background and surrounding details are completed in burnished Togidashi Maki-e before the main motif is added in flat Hira Maki-e.
The Japanese-made pen has a two-tone 18k gold nib and takes ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink. With its screw-on cap in place, it measures 142.4 mm long and weighs 33 g; barrel width is 12 mm.
