Overview

Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Roadmaster Rescue Chronograph measures a pulse with its 15-beat pulsometer and can time two intervals at once.

A pulse reading in seconds

On the green dial, the chronograph records elapsed time up to 12 hours. Used with the 15-beat pulsometer scale, it can also measure a pulse rate. To take a pulse, you start the chronograph, count 15 heartbeats, and stop it. The scale then gives the rate in beats per minute. After a workout or a hike, you can take your pulse in seconds.

A ceramic timing bezel

You can use the separate unidirectional stainless steel bezel to time another interval. Its ceramic insert resists scratches and fading caused by ultraviolet light. Thirty-seven sealed tritium gas tubes provide continuous, self-powered light, and a luminous gas tube is also set into the bezel.

Rooted in railroad timekeeping

Reliable timekeeping has guided Ball since 1891, when a train collision at Kipton, Ohio, led Webb C. Ball to set inspection standards for railroad watches.

Inside, the Ball RR1402 automatic movement provides a 42-hour power reserve and handles the weekday and date displays. The movement’s oil is formulated for temperatures down to -49°F (-45°C). An Amortiser ring around the movement absorbs energy from lateral shocks.

The details

The titanium case measures 42 mm across and 14.8 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal over the dial and a sapphire display back. It has a screw-down crown and is water-resistant to 100 meters.

The watch is built to withstand shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). A stainless steel and titanium bracelet fastens with a folding clasp.

Questions & Answers

How do I use the 15-beat pulsometer?

Start the chronograph, count 15 heartbeats, and stop it. The pulsometer scale converts that elapsed-time reading into a pulse rate in beats per minute. The reading comes from the mechanical chronograph.

How is the rotating bezel different from the chronograph?

The chronograph measures elapsed time through its hands and counters, with measurements up to 12 hours. The unidirectional bezel has a separate elapsed-time scale around the dial, which you can use to time another interval.

Does the gas-tube illumination need charging?

No. This watch uses 37 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.

How is the movement protected from shocks and magnetic fields?

Ball’s Amortiser system uses a protective ring around the movement to absorb energy from lateral shocks, reducing the force transmitted to the mechanism inside. Magnetic resistance helps keep external magnetic fields from disturbing its rate. The watch is rated to 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.

Why is it important to secure the crown after setting?

After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
