Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Roadmaster Ocean Explorer tracks the tides alongside the moon phase, for anyone who plans their time on the water.
Tides and moon phase on one dial
The moon phase and tide indications share a single blue dial. The external rotating bezel indicates high and low tides over a two-week period. A module developed by Ball shows spring and neap tides beside the moon phase.
Spring tides occur near new and full moons, when the sun, Earth, and moon are approximately aligned. Neap tides occur around the quarter moons. Before a fishing trip or a sail, a glance at the watch shows where the tide cycle stands.
Rooted in railroad timekeeping
Ball’s motto is “accuracy under adverse conditions.” That idea goes back to 1891, when a train collision at Kipton, Ohio, led Webb C. Ball to set inspection standards for railroad watches. Inside the case, the Ball RR1803-C automatic movement powers the time and date.
Lit by 33 tritium tubes
Thirty-three sealed tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands, dial, and moon-phase display continuously, without needing to be charged by light. The bezel markings use Super-LumiNova, which stores light from an outside source and releases it as a glow.
The details
The stainless steel case measures 41 mm across and 14.8 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches), and the case is water-resistant to 100 meters. A stainless steel bracelet fastens with a folding clasp.
The external bezel indicates high and low tides over a two-week period. Ball’s movement module shows spring and neap tides beside the moon phase. Spring tides occur near new and full moons, when the sun, Earth, and moon are approximately aligned; neap tides occur around the quarter moons. You can follow those stages of the tide cycle alongside the moon phase on the watch.
The 33 tritium tubes illuminate the hands, dial, and moon-phase display continuously. The tide bezel uses Super-LumiNova, which glows after exposure to an outside light source. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
