Overview

Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Engineer Master II Diver Worldtime shows the time in cities around the world and adds a diving bezel for timing.

Born from standard time

American railroads adopted standard time in 1883, the year Webb C. Ball became the first Cleveland jeweler to use official time signals. The Worldtime applies the same idea of standard time zones on a global scale.

World time at a glance

A ring of cities and a 24-hour scale let you compare the time in several zones at once. On the 24-hour scale, the hour next to each city name gives the time there and distinguishes day from night. On a call with colleagues abroad, a glance at the city ring tells you whether they are at work or asleep.

A separate unidirectional diving bezel carries its own elapsed-time scale, so you can time an interval while still reading world time. The blue dial also shows the weekday and date alongside the main hands.

Lit by 36 tritium tubes

Thirty-six sealed tritium tubes keep the hands, dial, and bezel illuminated continuously. They produce their own light without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp.

A COSC-certified movement

Inside, the COSC-certified Ball RR1501-C automatic movement provides a 38-hour power reserve and is visible through a sapphire case back. COSC, the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, checks the accuracy of each certified movement over 15 days.

The watch is built to withstand shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). The case is water-resistant to 300 meters.

The details

The stainless steel case measures 42 mm across and 14.4 mm thick, with a screw-down crown. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the display. The rubber strap fastens with a pin buckle.

Questions & Answers

How do I compare time zones on the Worldtime display?

Read the reference cities against the 24-hour scale to compare several zones together. A conventional GMT uses an additional hand to show another zone. On the Worldtime, the city names identify the zones you can read against the 24-hour scale. The 24-hour scale distinguishes day from night, though not every fractional-hour offset is represented.

Can I time an interval while using the world-time display?

Yes. The unidirectional diving bezel provides its own elapsed-time scale. You can use that scale to time an interval while still reading the time in other cities on the city ring and 24-hour scale.

How are the Worldtime’s different scales illuminated?

Thirty-six tritium tubes illuminate the hands, dial, and bezel, keeping the time and timing scales lit continuously. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.

What does magnetic resistance mean for the movement?

Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.

What does COSC certification mean for this movement?

The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.

Why is it important to secure the crown after setting?

After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
