Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Roadmaster Marine GMT tracks three time zones on a blue dial and is water-resistant to 300 meters.
Three time zones at once
Ball’s link to time zones dates to 1883, when American railroads adopted standard time. That year, Webb C. Ball became Cleveland’s first jeweler to use official time signals. The main hands show local time, while a separate GMT hand indicates the time in a second zone.
Reading the same GMT hand against the bidirectional 24-hour bezel gives you a third zone. On a sailing trip or a long flight, home time stays on the GMT hand while you set the main hands to local time.
Ceramic bezel, glowing dial
The ceramic bezel surrounds the blue dial and resists scratches and fading caused by ultraviolet light. Twenty-eight sealed tritium gas tubes provide continuous illumination without needing to be charged by light.
The details
The Ball RR1203-C automatic movement provides a 38-hour power reserve and displays both the weekday and date. The sapphire case back reveals the movement, and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial. The titanium case measures 40 mm across and 14 mm thick, with a screw-down crown.
The watch is built to withstand shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). The case is water-resistant to 300 meters. A stainless steel and titanium bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
The main hands show local time, and the GMT hand reads a second zone on the fixed 24-hour scale. Turn the bidirectional bezel to read that same GMT hand against another 24-hour scale for a third zone.
The transparent back reveals the automatic Ball RR1203-C movement and winding rotor. The movement also supplies the day and date display and has a 38-hour power reserve.
No. This watch uses 28 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
