With 300 meters of water resistance and an 80-hour power reserve, the Ball Engineer M Skindiver III is a limited-edition diver with a luminous sapphire bezel.
A luminous sapphire bezel
The unidirectional sapphire bezel carries a luminous scale for measuring elapsed time. On a swim or a snorkeling trip, the bezel keeps track of your time in the water.
Framed by the sapphire bezel, a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal rises above the dial. The blue dial also displays the date. Thirty-two sealed tritium gas tubes keep the hands and hour markers illuminated continuously. They need no battery and do not have to be charged by sunlight or a lamp.
Ball’s in-house movement
The Engineer M collection honors founder Webster Clay Ball, who set inspection standards for railroad watches after an 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio. Like the rest of the collection, the Skindiver III uses a Ball manufacture movement, the COSC-certified RRM7309-C caliber. COSC is the official Swiss institute that tests chronometers for accuracy over 15 days.
80 hours of power reserve
Fully wound, this automatic caliber provides an 80-hour power reserve, enough to keep the watch going for more than three days off the wrist.
The details
This limited edition of 1,000 watches has a stainless steel case measuring 40.5 mm across and 14 mm thick. With its screw-down crown, the case is water-resistant to 300 meters. In Ball’s patented Amortiser system, a protective ring around the movement absorbs lateral shocks before they reach the mechanism. Magnetic resistance is rated at 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). A 20 mm stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
Its scale can be used to time an interval while the main hands continue to show the time. The bezel turns in one direction around the separate domed sapphire crystal that covers the dial. Its luminous scale can also be read after dark.
No. This watch uses 32 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Fully wound, the movement can run for 80 hours, a little more than three days. The time remaining when you take it off depends on how much power is already stored in the mainspring.
Ball’s Amortiser system uses a protective ring around the movement to absorb energy from lateral shocks, reducing the force transmitted to the mechanism inside.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
Water resistance depends on the condition of the seals and correct closure of the crown and case. Seals age over time, so water resistance can decline unless the seals are checked and replaced. Follow Ball’s care and service instructions.
