Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Engineer III Outlier GMT tracks three time zones and lets you change local time in one-hour jumps without stopping the watch.
Rooted in railroad time
Ball’s link to time zones dates to 1883, when American railroads adopted standard time. That year, Webb C. Ball became Cleveland’s first jeweler to use official time signals. Each of the 1,000 watches is fitted with the Ball Manufacture RRM7337-C caliber.
Local time in one-hour jumps
The caliber lets you move the local hour hand in one-hour steps. The seconds keep going, and the GMT hand stays on home time. The date changes with local time as you adjust the hour hand.
Reading the GMT hand against the bidirectional 24-hour bezel gives you a third time zone. Landing after a long flight, you can set local time at the gate and still see what time it is back home.
Ceramic bezel, glowing dial
A ceramic bezel surrounds the black dial. The ceramic insert resists scratches and the color fading that ultraviolet light can cause. Super-LumiNova markings on its GMT scale glow after exposure to light. Twenty-nine sealed tritium tubes illuminate the hands and dial continuously. They produce their own light without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp.
A COSC-certified movement
The COSC-certified automatic movement. COSC, the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, checks the accuracy of each certified movement over 15 days.
Shielded from magnetism
A mu-metal shield redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement. The shield is made from nickel, iron, copper, and molybdenum. Magnetic resistance is rated at 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Ball’s Amortiser system adds a protective ring that absorbs energy from lateral shocks before they reach the mechanism.
The details
An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the black dial and magnified date. The 904L stainless steel case measures 40 mm across and 13.8 mm thick. The 904L alloy is valued for its high resistance to corrosion. With its screw-down crown, the case is water-resistant to 200 meters.
Ball rates the watch for shocks up to 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity). The watch comes on a 904L stainless steel bracelet, 20 mm wide, with a folding clasp.
The main hands show local time, and the GMT hand reads a second zone on the fixed 24-hour scale. Turn the bidirectional bezel to read that same GMT hand against another 24-hour scale for a third zone.
Use the crown to move the local 12-hour hand in one-hour steps. The GMT hand continues to show home time and the seconds keep running, so you can adjust local time without resetting either one. The date follows local time as the hour hand moves. This way of setting local time independently is often called a true GMT.
The ceramic bezel uses light-charged Super-LumiNova markings. The 29 tritium tubes on the hands and dial supply their own continuous light. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Amortiser surrounds the movement with a protective ring that absorbs energy from lateral shocks. A mu-metal shield redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement to help keep those fields from disturbing its rate. The watch is rated to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
