Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Engineer III Legend Arabic puts large luminous numerals at 6, 9, and 12 on a white dial for fast reading.
Easy to read at a glance
The large Arabic numerals contrast with the white dial, so they stand out instantly, even behind the wheel. A standardized dial layout was among the requirements Webb C. Ball set for railroad watches after the 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio.
A magnifier enlarges the date for easier reading. Twenty-nine sealed tritium tubes illuminate the hands and markers continuously, without needing to be charged in sunlight or under a lamp.
A COSC-certified movement
The COSC-certified Ball RR1101-C automatic movement is fitted with Ball’s Amortiser shock protection, a ring around the movement that absorbs lateral shocks. COSC is the official Swiss institute that tests chronometers for accuracy over 15 days. The watch resists magnetic fields up to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss) and shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity).
The details
The case is 904L stainless steel, an alloy whose chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper content helps it resist corrosion and acids. It measures 40 mm across and 11.5 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown. It is water-resistant to 100 meters. A 904L stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
The Arabic numerals at 6, 9, and 12 remain the dial’s main reference points, with 29 tritium tubes illuminating the hands and markers continuously. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
904L contains chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper. That composition gives it strong resistance to corrosion and acids, contributing to the durability of the steel used in this watch.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
