The Ball Engineer III Invigorating Serpent marks the Year of the Snake with a natural green malachite dial whose banding differs on every watch.
A natural malachite dial
Natural malachite gives the dial its green color and bands, so your dial’s banding may differ from the one pictured. For this Year of the Snake edition, Ball draws on the themes of luck and renewal. The caduceus engraved on the case back represents peace and prosperity.
Lit by 14 tritium tubes
Fourteen sealed tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands and hour markers continuously, without needing to be charged by light. Beneath the stone dial, the Ball RR1103 automatic movement powers the hour, minute, and seconds hands and the date.
Protected against magnetism
The watch resists magnetic fields up to 80,000 A/m, equivalent to 1,000 gauss. That protection echoes the requirements Webb C. Ball set for railroad watches after an 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio. The watch also withstands shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity).
The details
The 904L stainless steel case measures 40 mm across and 13.15 mm thick. The 904L alloy is valued for its high resistance to corrosion. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the malachite dial. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters. A stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.

What makes the malachite dial and engraved back distinctive?
Malachite is a natural stone with bands of green running through it. Each dial comes from a different section, so its banding varies from the photographed example. For this Year of the Snake edition, Ball associates the snake with luck and renewal. The Caduceus engraved on the back represents peace and prosperity.
Does the gas-tube illumination need charging?
No. This watch uses 14 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
What does magnetic resistance mean for the movement?
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
