Limited to 1,000 watches, the Ball Engineer II 1917 Endurance pairs a blue dial with a COSC-certified automatic movement protected against shocks and magnetism.
Named for Shackleton’s ship
After Amundsen and Scott reached the South Pole, Ernest Shackleton set out to cross Antarctica from sea to sea. Named after his ship, the 1917 Endurance commemorates that expedition.
Easy to read after sunset
A magnifier over the date window makes the date easier to read at a glance. Seventeen sealed tritium tubes illuminate the hands and hour markers continuously, without needing to be charged by light. On a winter hike that ends after sunset, the luminous dial keeps the time easy to read.
A COSC-certified movement
The COSC-certified Ball RR1103-C automatic movement provides a 48-hour power reserve. COSC, the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, checks the accuracy of each certified movement over 15 days. Ball’s Amortiser system surrounds the movement with a ring that absorbs energy from lateral shocks before they reach the mechanism.
Protected against magnetism
Resistance to magnetism was one of the requirements Webb C. Ball set for railroad watches after the 1891 train collision at Kipton, Ohio. The watch withstands magnetic fields up to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss), which helps protect the movement’s rate.
The details
The stainless steel case measures 40 mm across and 13.6 mm thick, with a screw-down crown. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial. The watch resists shocks of 5,000 Gs (5,000 times the force of gravity), and the case is water-resistant to 100 meters. A stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
The name recalls Ernest Shackleton’s ship and his plan to cross Antarctica from sea to sea after Amundsen and Scott had reached the South Pole. The 1917 Endurance honors that expedition as an edition of 1,000 automatic watches.
No. This watch uses 17 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Ball’s Amortiser system uses a protective ring around the movement to absorb energy from lateral shocks, reducing the force transmitted to the mechanism inside. Magnetic resistance helps keep external magnetic fields from disturbing its rate. The watch is rated to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
