With both a chronograph and a timing bezel, the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Submarine Warfare Chronograph can time two intervals at once.
Two ways to time an interval
The chronograph measures elapsed time, and the unidirectional bezel can time another interval on its separate scale. You can use either function while still reading the time, weekday, and date on the black dial. You might time a lap with the chronograph while the bezel tracks your total workout.
Rooted in railroad timekeeping
Ball’s focus on dependable timekeeping goes back to 1891, when Webb C. Ball set inspection standards for railroad watches after the train collision at Kipton, Ohio. Today, the Ball RR1402 automatic movement inside the case provides a 48-hour power reserve.
Built to absorb shocks
Ball’s Amortiser system surrounds the movement with a protective ring that absorbs energy from lateral shocks, reducing the force transmitted to the mechanism. The watch is rated for shocks up to 7,500 Gs (7,500 times the force of gravity). It also resists magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m (the international standard for antimagnetic watches). The case is water-resistant to 300 meters.
The details
The 42 mm case combines titanium with stainless steel components. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial, and a patented guard protects the crown. Twenty-three sealed tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands and hour markers continuously. You can read the time after dark without ever having to charge the tubes in sunlight or under a lamp.
The watch comes on a titanium and stainless steel bracelet with a patented folding clasp that includes an extension.
No. This watch uses 23 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Ball’s Amortiser system uses a protective ring around the movement to absorb energy from lateral shocks, reducing the force transmitted to the mechanism inside. Magnetic resistance helps keep external magnetic fields from disturbing its rate. The watch is rated to 4,800 A/m. Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
Water resistance depends on the condition of the seals and correct closure of the crown and case. Seals age over time, so water resistance can decline unless the seals are checked and replaced. Follow Ball’s care and service instructions.
