Watch water resistance guide

Good morning to everyone!

Today from Iguana Sell we want to make a summary of one of the most common doubts when buying a watch, that is, what resistance to water have and how is it interpreted.

Normally the water resistance of each watch is indicated in the back of the case, next to the reference and model and some other differential characteristics. Depending on the type of watch, its resistance to water will be more or less. It  will indicate how much our watch can get into contact with water. Diver watches are undoubtedly intended to be used  during sports, specially water sports. 

It is very important to be know that although our watch is "Water Resistant" or "Waterproof", this does not always mean that we can dive or snorkle with it. We must take into account the atmospheres / bars of resistance, in which the water resistance is usually indicated.

Watches with greater water resistance include Sinn divers watches, especially the Sinn U1 model, with a resistance of 1000m and Sinn U200, with a tightness of 2000m.

Does this mean that with my 50 ATM watch I can dive 500 meters?

Unfortunately not.

Watch manufacturers perform static pressure tests to set the watches' water resistance. So, they do not take into account certain phenomena or events that usually occur while we are snorkeling, such as extreme temperatures, sudden pressure changes...

Water resistance is established by ISO 2281 and ISO 6425 norms, depending on the resistance that each watch allows.

Helium Valve

Water resistence

Among the different scuba watches we find the Ball Enginer Master Skindiver II watch equipped with a helium valve. Once we have finished diving, it is possible that the time used when reaching the surface is not enough to expell all the helium, this is why this valve can help us to do so and avoid our watches to be damaged by pressure. 

Specialists at great depths 

The Glycine Combat Sub watches all have a water resistance of 20 Atm, so they are suitable for diving, as long as it is not at great depths. One of our clients shared with us a video where you can clearly see him diving with his new Glycine Combat Sub watch with rubber strap.
