In today's post we will talk about the function of the chronograph watches and the different types that exist.
As many of you will know, this function is usually common in watches of more technical complexity, therefore of better quality. So we want to show you the different types of chronographs you can find.
What is a Chronograph Watch?
The term chronograph comes from the latin chronogrăphus (chronos: time and graphein: write), and this from the Greek χρονογράφος that literally means "write the time".
A chronograph is a watch function that allows us to measure the time in a certain space, independent of the time indication. In analog watches it is perceived through three spheres. One measures the hours, other the minutes and the third the seconds, that can oscillate from a small fraction of second until 12 hours. Two buttons on the side of the watch, where the crown is located, is what allows us to control this function.
It is important not to confuse it with the chronometer. To be a chronograph watch it is necessary to pass the exhausted evaluations of the Official Control of Chronometers (C.O.S.C) among other tests, these watches can not spend more than 2 split seconds every 24 hours.
These were created to measure the time that recehorses need to cross the track.
Today it is used to measure specific lapses of time, in hundredths and even thousandths of second, depending on their complexity.
Types of Chronographs
Monopulsante: They are the chronographs with a single pushbutton to start, stop and reset the chronographic hands. In this case we have theMontblanc automatic watch 1858.
Foudroyante: Chronographs with an additional dial in which the hands completes one turn in a second. Allows timing from fifteen minutes to 1/10 of a second.
Rattrapante: This type of chronograph is equipped with two central hands to measure intermediate times. By pressing the initial button the main hand is put into operation, if we press again the second hand reaches the main, hence its name in French retrepe (catch in French). When you press the second button, both hands return to their initial position.
This type of chronograph is used to measure time in races. This is why the Chronograph with Rattrapante, based on a clutch system and mechanical memory, is one of the most difficult watchmaking complications. Of this type we can findthe Eberhard Extra Fort Chrono Rattrapante Automatic Watch.
Fly-back: While the other chronographs have to be pressed 4 times to make the start-up, stop, set in zero and restart it, with the Fly-Back you simply have to press twice. As an example we have theMontblanc Tradition Chronograph quartz watch.
These watches usually belong to the most luxurious range of brands because its technical composition is very complex, hence its high cost. However, the accuracy of this mechanism is incredible surpassing even the new technologies.

I already own a pelikan m600, my favourite pen. I bought this for my organiser, slightly smaller and fine nib for the thinner lines. The pen looks stunning, great quality apart from the nib which felt very scratchy and irritating to use. I managed to fix it my self by polishing it with micro mesh. Writes fine now, but at this price I don’t expect to have to fix quality control issues myself, it should be just perfect out of the box.
