This Namiki Emperor Gold Fish features the Shishiai-Togidashi-Taka Maki-e technique, combining Taka (raised) Maki-e and Togidashi (burnished) Maki-e, the highest level of Maki-e requiring highly advanced techniques. Urushi lacquer and charcoal powder are used to highlight the main fish design in high relief. The raised elements are then smoothed to achieve a gradient and polished to a uniform shine. In this fountain pen, you can see several golden fish, symbols of good luck and fortune. The artisan for this piece is Seiki.
